According to the Chinese, the natural world consists of 5 forms of energy: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. When integrated in a space in a balanced way, it promotes positive energy. The chances of happiness and success are therefore increased.

The elements of Feng Shui are integral, if not the most important part of Feng Shui. The elements are what connects the life to the energies which we desire or even need to heal and grow. The 5 Feng Shui elements are the following: Water, Metal, Wood, Fire, Earth

All of these elements can be incorporated with their designated direction on a Feng Shui color compass and bring the energies into your life which would be beneficial for you. When expressing these elements through the use of colors and objects in a certain direction of your home and office, it successfully brings in the positivity which you need, this is also knows as chi.

Let us explore each of these elements individually:

Water

This element is the ancient symbol of abundance and is needed in the North, East and Southeast directions of your environment.

It can be expressed in the manner of décor within your home or office. The keyword which describes water the best is flow. Sticking to this word by using objects such as images of water, mirrors, etc. would be beneficial. Also, colors such as blue and black are the colors which express this element.

Wood

If clarity, energy, strength are traits and characteristics within your life that need improvement then this element should be focused on in the East direction of the environment which you spend most of your time in. The colors which express this element are green and brown. One of the objects that can be placed in this part of your environment is different kinds of healthy plants.

Earth

Southwest, Northeast and the center are the directions in feng shui which strengthen the element of earth. Stability, support, power, and calmness are the benefits you can bring into your life by incorporating colors such as ivory, shades of beige, bronze and softer browns.

Fire

One of the biggest benefits which this element brings into your life is the energy of creativity. When and if this trait is lacking or completely missing from your life, the element of fire is your focus. This element should be strengthened in your environment through colors like red, purple, orange, yellow, pink, magenta and also with shapes such as stars and triangles. These expressions must be done in the directions of South, Southwest, Northeast and the center.

Metal

Individuals tend to strengthen this element when their life is full of frustration, overwhelming feelings and thoughts, and lack of direction in life. This element is also beneficial when you’re beginning a new chapter in terms of business or overall life.

White, beige and gray along with round objects and metal décor is the method to express metal in the designated directions.

Even though each individual element has its own representation, the elements have always been interacting with each other and are a necessary part of life and growth.

–       Water and Earth interact with one another because water is the element that absorbs minerals from the earth in order to grow life such as plants.

–       Earth and Fire interact through plants and the sun. Since plants breathe in air and receive light from the sun to grow.

–       Wood and Water are again a set of elements that interact through trees. If the wood of a tree is set on fire, then it causes evaporation of water into the air.

–       Lastly, earth and metal interact by means of the circle of life. Eventually everything will turn into ash, as a part of the earth and become a mineral (metal) before the circle continues.

Though these elements do us tremendous good, they also have downsides which need to be considered. Too much of an element in an environment can do harm such as earth. It causes heaviness, sluggish, lethargic and burdened feeling and can affect productivity.

Destruction, imbalance and destabilizing behavior is a result of too much fire.

A final example would be excess water, causing negatives such as sensitivity, overly emotional, and melodramatic behavior.
